Colligan blamed the snafu on the venerable Palm OS, which is slated for a major upgrade within the next six months. "We have an older operating system here that sometimes is challenged in certain situations relative to network performance issues," Colligan noted. "We have to get to the next-generation operating system," he said.

Palm's CEO admitted that the popularity of the company's low-cost smartphone had eaten into sales of its higher-priced Treo handsets. "At Sprint, the only place where the Centro is shipping, we saw some cannibalization, but we had expected that," Colligan observed.


Moving forward, Palm will field a broader range of smartphones featuring new designs, according to Colligan. When it comes to the design of "our next-generation platform products, we are not stopping at anything short of revolutionary and fantastic," he said.
Wi-Fi, GPS, expanded storage capacity, and premium software are among the capabilities that Palm might add to products slated for introduction at the price points of $99, $199, and $299, Colligan noted. Palm also intends to continue to deliver handsets powered by Windows Mobile. "We have updated the Treo 750 to Windows Mobile 6.0 and we will work with Microsoft to drive more adoption of Exchange Active Sync in the enterprise," Colligan said.

Denk dat de schrijver van het artikel verkeerde aannames heeft gedaan, want Colligan heeft niets gezegd over dat het nieuwe OS er binnen 6 maanden aan zit te komen. De laatste keer dát er iets over gezegd werd, een paar weken geleden, was het nog zo'n 18 maanden.

En tja, hoewel de Centro best een leuk dingetje is, noemt Colligan dat ding ook 'fantastisch' en een 'revolutie op dat prijspunt', dus hij kan al die grote woorden wel blijven gebruiken, je moet het als gebruiker nog gewoon eerst zien.
