T3 first impressions

I've been playing with my T3 since yesterday morning and it is AWESOME.

I've had a Palm since '97 - a PalmPilot Professional. I've had in between a Vx, IIIc, m505, m515 and a Tungsten T and the T3 is the most exciting machine I've ever had since the Professional. Definetly a Pocket PC killer.

The screen is awesome - 320x480 with a collapsible grafitti area. At the touch of a button you can have it display in landscape. Landscape is awesome for web browsing, docs to go, email, looing at photos, etc. I imagine in 6 months there will be more apps that support this mode. Because the grafitti area is collapsible, you can use the entire screen for the program you are using. It's also very nice that you can choose to write on the screen itself keeping the grafitti area closed. For example you can then browse in landscape and view pages in 480 pixel wide while still being able to write the url's on screen.

T3 comes with a photo program (integrated in the Palm Desktop for easy adding/removing of photos), docs to go 6, Palm reader, Realone mp3 player, Kinoma video player and Acrobat reader for Palm OS.

T3 is fast ! 400MHz CPU. You can really tell when display jpegs from a digital camera (for example the Minolta Xi).

I see it's for sale for €399 at Pdashop. Definetly worth every eurocent.

Pictures:
- landscape photo

- landscape web browsing

- new info screen that shows memory used (ram and card) and remaining battery.

Your third screenshot is interesting, the new screen only uses 320*320 pixels and the old part remains.

Groeten, Roel.

Yes, apps that dont know about the extra lenght are shown on 320x320.

Btw, any idea why this was moved to Off-topic ? This was about a new Palm device, this is the Palmclub, how can it be off-topic?

No idea yet! I havent taken it out of the house. I imagine the 400 mhz cpu eats a lot of batteries. The review at www.infosync.no mentioned 2 hours continuous with full brightness. Sounds very little.

I don't who or why and I agree this thread is not an off-topic thread, so I've moved it to Hardware.

Keep us posted with your experiences!

Greetings, Roel.

I moved it to the Off Topic forum. I thought that introduction-threads (I've bought a new pda and I want to tell you something about it) had to be posted in that forum, but obvious they don't have to.

Unhappy

Article from GearBits. I dont own a T3

"There seems to be a major problem with the new Palm Tungsten T3 SD card drive system. I've been using Sandisk SD card with the Palm T/C, and when I started to use the card in the T3, I ran into all sorts of problems. I had a problem with file corruption and had to reformat the whole card, and when I ran my backup programs (such as BackupMan and JBBackup for OS5). So, I thought the card went bad, and went out and purchased a PNY SD card (manufactured by Toshiba). Unfortunately, I am still getting the backup error (such as system error #0x2908 "A sector that was accessed is bad." or unknown error). However, I have never had these error with my T/C, and the Sandisk card that gave me the problem is running fine when I returned it to the T/C and reformatted. So, I was both puzzled and disturbed to say the least.

However, when I got in touch with Mike Waldron at Bits' n Bolt Software, it seems that the problem is more wide-spread. According to his website, there is a SD driver problem in the T3 that exhibits such symptoms, and there is a big warning not to use any Sandisk SD cards.

So, there seems to be a trouble at Paradise, and let's hope palmOne takes action to remedy this situation quickly."
