Thumbs up Treo 650 on vodafone.nl, using usb modem, using linux

This is a HowTo on using the Treo 650 as a modem for a linux-desktop, using Mandrake 2006.0.

Everything is done using root.

Step 1:
Buy the Treo usb modem or download the demo from
Treo USB Modem
What you get is ZIP-file, containing a PRC-file for the Treo and some examples / templates for ppp.

Step 2:
Install the USBModem.prc. I did install it using kPilot and doing a sync.
A new programm called USB modem will appear in the Treo.

Step 3:
Copy ppp-script-edge-template to /etc/ppp/peers

Step 4:
Edit ppp-script-edge-template:

[root@alpha stunnel]# cat /etc/ppp/peers/ppp-script-edge-template
460800
connect '/usr/sbin/chat -s -v "" "AT&F0E0V1S0=0" OK \'AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","LIVE.VODAFONE.COM"\' OK ATD*99***1# CONNECT'
debug
updetach
crtscts
noipdefault
novj
lcp-echo-failure 0
nobsdcomp
novjccomp
nopcomp
noaccomp
noauth
user vodafone
modem
usepeerdns
defaultroute
connect-delay 5000

Most important for Vodafone NL: see the phone number that is changed. Default it is *99# but I had to change it to *99***1#. Off course no one from Vodafone supports linux and/or the Treo

Step 5:
Notice the user vodafone as the ppp parameter. This matches the following file:

[root@alpha stunnel]# cat /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
# Secrets for authentication using PAP
# client server secret IP addresses
vodafone * vodafone

Step 6:
Try to get it working using kppp. I did not bother that; that is up to you. Have fun!

My step 6:
[root@alpha stunnel]# cat /root/treo650usbmodem.sh
#!/bin/sh
cd /etc/ppp/peers
pppd /dev/ttyACM0 call ppp-script-edge-template
[root@alpha stunnel]#

Before you execute this shell script
- turn on the Treo
- connect it to the usb port of the PC
- activate the usb modem on the Treo

By activating the usb modem on the Treo, the device /dev/ttyACM0 will be created. It did happen to me while fiddling with it, that sometimes /dev/ttyACM1 was created. In case you already have lots of ACMx devices, find out which one is created:

[root@alpha stunnel]# ls /dev/ttyA*
ls: /dev/ttyA*: unknown file or folder
....oops, first turn on the USB modem on the Treo

do it again
[root@alpha stunnel]# ls /dev/ttyA*
/dev/ttyACM0

Maybe I should add Step 1.5 to the procedure:
- first Step 1: buy the Treo software or download the demo

Step 1.5
- start usbview
- activate usb modem on the treo
- type ls /dev/ttyA*

--> The device should appear
--> usbview should show the Treo, using black colors. You folks all know that when usbview shows a device using red colors, you are missing something in your distri.....
