[Nieuws] PalmOS 6.1 (Cobalt) zal niet worden uitgeleverd

Eerder lieten wij weten dat PalmOS 6.1 (Cobalt) op de website van ACCESS/Palmsource van status was veranderd. Helaas is dit gebeurd om aan te geven dat Cobalt niet verder ontwikkeld zal worden en dus een zachte dood gestorven is. De laatste release was in September 2004. Een nieuwe release zal er niet komen.

According to Senior Director, Corporate Communications, PalmSource, Maureen O'Connell, Palm OS® Cobalt 6.1 was released in September 2004. We haven't released a new version of Palm OS Cobalt. Our current development efforts are focused on the ACCESS Linux Platform (ALP), announced at the 3GSM World Congress in February 2006.I'm sorry, folks, but Cobalt is over and done with. It was a great idea, but as I said in last week's podcast, we're not going to see Cobalt on any production device out of Palm or any other ACCESS licensee. To drive the point, home, O'Connell reports that, The Palm Powered products available on the market today are all using Palm OS® Garnet. No one is using Cobalt.

Alle inspanning op het gebied van development wordt op dit moment gestoken in de ontwikkeling van ACCESS Linux Platform. Wat er verder gaat gebeuren met PalmOS zoals iedereen dat kent is voor nu nog onbekend.

Here are my predictions about what could happen. I want to point out that I am speculating here, and I have no inside information. I predict that Palm is hard at work developing their own handheld operating system that will drive a new generation of Treo smartphones and Palm's other handhelds and Mobile Managers. Over the last year, Palm has been hiring too many Linux software engineers for something like this to not be happening in their labs. LG is likely waiting for ACCESS to finish ALP before they rollout a new smartphone handset. And, so, we are left with Garmin. I'm not sure where they will end up. Like Palm, Garmin is also a two trick pony because they offer GPS units that run both the Palm OS and Windows Mobile operating systems. I'm going to say that Garmin is too close to call and can just as easily stay with both Windows Mobile and ALP or ditch ALP and stick with Windows Mobile only. We will find out what happens in due time.

Het kan dus zijn dat we binnenkort een eigen OS van Palm (dus niet van ACCESS/Palmsource) te zien krijgen op nieuwe devices. Waarschijnlijk zal dit OS net als ALP gebaseerd zijn op Linux.
