TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 for smartphones and pda's features a new Buddy function. With TomTom Buddies you can invite other TomTom users to track your location on a map, send instant messages and share locations and points of interest. This function was already available on the TomTom GO navigation devices, but we're confident it will really take off now that PDA and smartphone owners can join in. This guide explains how it all works.

TomTom Navigator 6 - Buddies explained

You can find TomTom Buddies in the PLUS menu.

Tap on the TomTom Buddies icon and you'll end up on this screen. The second option allows you to invite a new buddy. Only buddies that are invited can see your position on the map. Remember that once you've added a buddy, they can always track where you are. But don't worry about your privacy, you can hide your position temporarily if you want.

The first option in the main Buddy menu enables you to turn tracking off. You can still see the locations of others, but they can't see you until you switch it back on.

Switch it back on and others will be able to see you, just like before.

Tap on Invite new Buddy to add a friend. This only works when your friend is a TomTom user and has registered an account on the TomTom website. You need to know with which email adress is associated with your friend's account, because you have to enter his or hers email address on the screen.

Oops, you've entered the wrong email address. But you can try again.

Once you've entered the email address of your friend, TomTom Navigator 6 checks if he/she is a registered TomTom user. You'll need a GPRS connection or other data connection for all buddy functions.

After your new buddy has accepted your invitation (screen not shown here), he/she is added to your buddy list and you can check if the position is still up-to-date. If you need to update the information, go to the main Buddy menu and tap on Update now.

Tap on Show Buddy on map to track the location of your buddy.

In the map detail preferences screen (Menu, Browse Map, Options), you can choose whether you'd like to see your buddies while navigating.

The main Buddy menu has a second screen with a couple of other options, e.g. Delete Buddy. A much more interesting option is shown in the upper left corner: sending instant messages to buddies.

Tap on Send Buddy a message. Once you've selected the recipient, you can enter a short text message. Unfortunately for Treo users one handed navigation is not supported and capitalization works er... a bit different. You have to keep the Shift (or Option key) pressed down to write capital or special characters. Tap Done when you're done.

Your friend will receive the message almost instantly. The message will appear as an icon in the top left corner of the screen.

You can tap on the little icon to read incoming messages.

You can also go back to the main Buddy menu and tap on Read messages. This screen has three options: Read inbox messages, Read outbox messages and Message preferences.

The Message preferences screen for messages is extremely simple: just enable/disable if you'd like to delete your incoming and/or outgoing messages or not.

Another cool feature: you can send locations to buddies. Just tap on Send Buddy a location in the main Buddy menu. Your buddy can send you his home address, a specific location or another type of location, like a Point Of Interest (POI). In the screen shown here, your buddy has sent you the location of a museum.

Once you've received a location from your buddy, you can tap on Options to examine further options. You can, for example, navigate to the given location, look it up on a map or add it as a favorite. You can also forward the location to another buddy or send a reply.

Don't panic if this all sounded too complicated. TomTom Navigator 6 contains a small guide that shows you the main functions.

Isn't this cool? You can check whether your friend is in your favorite cafe, at home or anywhere else. Just one drawback though: once they arrive somewhere, exit the TomTom NAVIGATOR application and then move to another location without starting TomTom again, you're sol. Only the last known location sent by TomTom Navigator is reflected on the server and this location will be shown on your device.
